Working on some live performance loop backgrounds as we speak. Sweden has decided to try on summer once again and yes, I take small walks, but my work ethics are more due to circumstances.

See, I’ve contracted my very first pneumonia, and it’s a strange version of it indeed. I don’t cough, no fever to speak of except for the first few days when I had a bit of a temperature (but not brag worthy)… but my air pipes decided to cramp up! Since I’ve never suffered from asthma or anything like it it caught me and my local GP by surprise. I had to do the works, breathe into a funky machine and get my very first inhaler to take home with me! I just stared at it: “Wow, I’m every clichรฉ nerd in every bad 80’s and 90’s movie out there”.

Yes it helped and yes I’m getting better but my adventures right now are very teeny tiny. Maybe following Sanna out to attend local hangouts in Gothenburg the West Pride Weekend was too much excitement and my body just went; hey, there, small town girl, what the hell do you think you’re doing? Nah, I know.

Still, it’s been a weird few days with the inhaler.

My new live performance

I’m looking forward to tomorrow and a new chapter in my live performance. For the first time ever I’m playing on two keys simultaniously! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve been dreaming of a double key performance since I saw Tori Amos live at Hultsfred 2005. This gorgeous woman straddling the piano bench and commanding both a giant Bรถse and a fender Rhodes at the same time might be the sexiest, most wonderful thing I’ve ever seen. I was thinking, and had practiced, of doing it in Alingsรฅs already, but decided I wanted just two or three more rehearsals and to debut it in my home town as an homage to littlest Skara.

Greasy start

Today’s gig in Alingsรฅs was certainly interesting. The letter to the musicians told us to eat properly before, cause they’d only have fruit and cookies and coffee. Of course, when you tell me to do something, even well meant, I have to go and do the opposite ๐Ÿ˜‰ It’s an hour’s drive to Alingsรฅs from Skara and in that time, my tummy managed to work up an empty hollow that sang “mistaaaaaaake”. So we picked up the drummer and I went running into a burger place (yes, I of course go with the veggie burgers being a vegetarian, it’s still burger to me, note the absence of “ham” in the word), we made it just in time for meet and greet at the venue but I apologized to the other musicians. “I’ll say hello and shake in a minute, just let me eat first, trust me, it’s for your own good”. After that I was in a comfortable junk food coma/sedation, so everything was guooood ๐Ÿ˜‰

Then we got to talking, and we had specifically requested due to the drummer’s schedule that we play first. One of the other participants went: “Ooooh, big pressure opening the show”, but not really. Not to me. It’s still showing up for a job and doing it, no matter where and when. Tell us when to play and we’ll play, first, last, middle, whenever, we just needed to be first this time. We unpack in three to five minutes and then we’re ready to go. The show calls for it to be under 20 minutes, so I’ll pick three of my songs, runtime 12-15 minutes for the three, leaving the audience wanting more and us time to pack it all up again. I timed another participant who kept it going for about 22 minutes, and right there, you’ve lost points. I do see it as a good sign that my show was the only one drawing in outsiders from the building, who later applauded me as I was going to the loo (a taxing challenge for sure).

I DID have some difficulties squeezing into my usual stage clothes, and I had to loosen a belt or two after a while, which tells me either the burger meal lingered (still worth it) or I need to take more walks and cut down on the maybe-not-essential beer. If it WAS the burger, let me tell you…. oooooooh so worth it, you don’t even know! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I took some pics of competition this time, to show you that I’m actually up against variation this year (not just wee rock boys), there’s hip hop, blues, metal and just a lil’ bit of alternative rock. I still stand out, but not as much. But yes, I’m the only female act, and with a female bass player, I’m quite unusual too. Burger belly or no ๐Ÿ˜‰

A decade of Mezmerizing and Hypnotizing

I’ve gotta give a shoutout to System of A Down and their two albums that changed my life in 2005. I mean, I say they’re an influence, and people wonder how the f*ck can they influence my music? My answer? I don’t know.

I just know I loved Toxicity, I loved Steal This Album, and that was it. But when they released this… I played it round the clock. I was obsessed, and I didn’t even now why. It was just on repeat. I couldn’t stop listening. I’m still contemplating that they put some kind of subliminal, positive brainwashing messages in there. Because all of a sudden I was like: “Heeey, TV and fashion magazines are brainwashing me!” And I stopped watching TV, and I ripped up and burned all my Cosmos and similar mags. And I wrote songs for four hours a day instead. Most of my songs from my soon-to-be three albums are from this period of time in 2005-2006, so say thank you to the nice rock group! ๐Ÿ™‚

It was also during this period of time that I overnight started fighting for the underdogs, for equality, for not buying into the small shit we are distracted with, missing the bigger picture. Yes, literally, overnight. I remember this morning in October 2005 when I woke up with these thoughts and became so angry with media distracting me with the wrong things. And I thought: “My life is gonna be about helping”. So the “Equality Knight” I’ve been jokefully named was born right then and there. People looked at me funny when I looked for eco, fairtrade and locally produced, because it hadn’t become fashionable yet. New Age circuits believed there was a wave hitting the receptable at that very night, one out of three nights, so who knows? I’m glad I’ve got company now! ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyways, first gig of the year went smoothly, weird energy from some guys refusing to talk to me and shake my hand though (but gladly shaking my male drummers). At this point, I’m really used to it. Too bad one of ’em was in the jury, and a presenter, and couldn’t present me properly, or get what I was about, to save a life… As I said. Prepared. The audience was great though! ๐Ÿ™‚

Live shizzles

I told you I would sit on the second live 2015 surprise a bit longer, well, now it’s on. I’ve begun to practice Tori Amos style, i.e. playing two keyboards simultaniously, and while I MAY not be ready for the first show (still got some kinks and co-ordination to work out but it’s progressing fast) on friday, make sure to come to my live shows and see firsthand when I begin! ๐Ÿ™‚

Let me just tell you it’s a proper workout. I have this “step counter” on my mobile phone, recording my steps, you know, you’re ideally supposed to fit in about 10 000 each day, and each song when I’m standing up and playing and singing gives me about 100 steps now (in 3 minutes), even with constricted movements. And I’m sweating bullets.

But having fun and quite happy. As you can see. I might ask for the “carola”-fan (Swedish, Carola flรคkt, very Eurovision) next time, just to not stink up the place, the drummer looks quite relaxed and commercial with his fan! ๐Ÿ˜‰

They say the difference between a child and an adult is the prize of the toys.

If you catch me live 2013 you’re in for additional treats! ๐Ÿ™‚ Apart from not torturing the poor sound technician with always having to get a stereo cable for the piano (it only sends signals in mono, meaning one signal goes to two speakers instead of two identical signals or the sound going to a speaker each, providing a richer sound) as I’ve got both brill converters and some stereo cables! I also have a build on stand for the keyboard stand. Shhh. There might be some Tori Amos-“playing several stuff simultaniously” going on, but you’ll only know for sure if you come watch ๐Ÿ˜‰

And the wee toy you see below. It specializes in effects on voices. All instruments come out as signals to be interpreted, as soon as they go through a cable, and the speakers and monitors attached to the PA mixing table have the important job of interpreting those signals into sound again. Sometimes with effects through the table, built in or attached to it. In this instance, I treat the signal immediately with my own hands. I have missed reverb and effects (well, mystical music can’t be too dry) on my voice when the PA-system at the venue I’m playing hasn’t been able to provide it. All instruments have distinct signals, and often devices built to treat that very sonic picture especially. This is what amplifiers do for basses and guitars (two different amps, since a bass gives a… well bass-y signal), and the ve-5 here does this for vocals.Of course you could connect other instruments, I’ve done some experimenting with my voice and guitar amps, as long as you know it’s not costum made for it and you’re gonna have to be ready for both; interesting, or utter crap.

As it’s attached before the plug to the mixing table, I’m holding the reins on the effects. I’m not a control freak, but the fact that I get to press the buttons on my voice does make me feel like I have a lovely toy to play with ๐Ÿ˜€ I mostly bought it so I’d never be without delay, reverb and maybe some good old fashion looping on my live performances, but it’s a box full of chocolaty goodness for vocals only, so I am gonna have me some fun!
